How to Travel Cheap

December 4th, 2009 admin Leave a comment Go to comments

So we are in a major recession and you are thinking your travel days are over; no money to spend for travel. Before you decide not to travel, take a look at some creative ways to travel cheap. Here are some travel ideas we tried that work.

1. Help Drive Someone or their Car Home

Sometimes people need to drive for long distances and have no one to help. They are looking for someone to help with the driving. You may be expected to pitch in for gas. Make sure you know exactly what will be expected of you before you agree to go.

Sounds funny, but there are people who, for whatever reason, have to fly back home and need someone to drive their car home. Ebay is another reason people need a driver. They buy a car on Ebay; the car however is in another state. What to do? Many look for someone to drive the car for them. This way you only pay for one flight instead of two. Or if you are lucky, you find someone who needs a car driven back to your home state.

When we did this, years ago, the only way to find a car needing a driver was through the classified ads in the newspaper. Today, classifieds still work; however, the Internet is a great way to hook up with someone needing a driver. A general search or places like Craigslist can help you find the right situation

2. Become a Freelance Courier

Couriers are people who accompany freight usually on International flights. There are private individuals as well as businesses that prefer to have someone accompany their small freight, especially on International flights. They offer discounted air fare or will pay for your flight entirely just to have someone walk their items through customs.

There is a ton of information on becoming a courier on the Internet, and it is the best way to find information on becoming a courier. While there are associations you can join who promote couriers, once again make sure you read the fine print before you sign on. Another way is to contact freight companies directly to see if they use couriers.

3. Finding Clean, Safe and Inexpensive Places to Stay.

The most interesting and least expensive places to stay when you are travelling on a budget are Hostels. A bed in a dorm runs between $15 and $29 a night with private rooms costing more, but still cheaper than a hotel or motel.

A hostel gives you the opportunity to meet other travelers as well as locals who are usually happy to show you an area and introduce you to all the local hot spots. Plus, hostels typically have a guest kitchen where you can cook and store food. Since hostels have become more popular in the United States, you can find one in nearly every city. Hostels are like social media, a great place to network with others. We have seen many of our hostellers at Casa Yallaha in St. Augustine, FL hook up and travel together to Miami’s South Beach just to save money.

No matter how you decide to travel, make sure you do your homework, check references, stay safe and have fun.

If you are on a budget and would like to experience the romance and history of St. Augustine, Florida, come stay with friends at Casa Yallaha Hostel. For rates and more information on Casa Yallaha Hostel, go to http://www.casayallaha.com
